A source close to the White House has stated that President Biden is weighing whether or not to step down from his 2024 campaign. “He knows if he has two more events like that, we’re in a different place,” the source told the New York Times, referring to Biden’s sluggish performance on the debate stage in Atlanta last Thursday.

Biden appeared at a rally in North Carolina the next day where he acknowledged concerns about his age. “I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t debate as well as I used to,” he said.

Democratic donors and lawmakers have since spoken out about Biden’s condition. In an interview with MSNBC Tuesday, former Speaker of the House Nany Pelosi stated that she believed Biden’s mental fitness is a legitimate question. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas was the first in the party to publicly call for Biden to step down. “Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.”

Their concerns may be well founded considering the results of a recent poll released by CBS showing that Trump now has a 3-point lead against Biden in key battleground states.

When asked whether or not Biden was considering stepping down, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made clear that Biden remains committed to winning the election. She also said that his debate performance was due to jet lag, a busy schedule, and a cold.
